The best AI domain name generators in 2026
Updated May 11, 2026
AI domain generators have exploded since 2024. Some are genuinely useful; many are SEO-bait wrappers around a GPT call. This is an opinionated 2026 review based on running the same five test prompts through each tool. We include our own (NameBuddy.ai) but rank it honestly against the others — quality wins long-term, not bias.
Test methodology
We ran the following five prompts through each tool: (1) "AI agent that books meetings for sales teams", (2) "Sustainable activewear brand for women", (3) "Late-night ramen counter in Tokyo", (4) "Podcast about reading slowly in your 30s", (5) "Fractional CFO firm for indie game studios". For each tool, we recorded: average time-to-results, name quality (judged blind), TLDs offered, real-time availability checking, and pricing.
1. NameBuddy.ai
Disclosure: this is our tool. NameBuddy generates 10-20 names per search using a local Ollama (qwen3-family) backend, then checks real-time availability via WHOIS across .ai, .com, .io, .app, and .net before showing you a single name. You only ever see names you can register today.
- Speed: 30-90s per 10-name batch (the WHOIS step is the slow part).
- Quality: high. Names are brandable (portmanteaus, invented words, not just keyword concatenation).
- Availability: real-time, no false positives.
- Price: free with Google sign-in. No paywall on results.
- Sweet spot: AI-startups, SaaS, dev tools. Less strong on hyper-local brand names.
2. Namelix
The grandfather of this category, by the BrandBucket team. Generates branded names quickly and pairs each with an AI-generated logo. Availability check is a per-name click-through, not bulk.
- Speed: instant (no live availability check).
- Quality: strong on short brandable names, weaker on contextual specificity.
- Availability: linked to GoDaddy; many names shown are already taken.
- Price: free; pushes you toward premium pre-owned domains they sell.
- Sweet spot: visually-led founders who want a logo concept along with the name.
3. Brandsnap
A solid mid-tier option. Combines keyword pairing with availability checks. Less AI-native than the newer generation.
- Speed: fast.
- Quality: middling. Better at keyword-prefix names than at invented words.
- Availability: real-time on .com only.
- Price: free with affiliate links to registrars.
4. Bust A Name
Old-school keyword combiner. Not AI-driven, but worth mentioning because for very specific keyword-prefix domains ("get-", "my-", "the-") it still produces things AI tools won't suggest.
- Speed: instant.
- Quality: pre-AI era; works only if you already know your keywords.
- Sweet spot: keyword-prefix SEO domains, niche affiliate sites.
5. Domain.com / GoDaddy / Namecheap generators
Every major registrar has a generator on their checkout flow. They're optimised for selling you a domain, not for finding a good name. Skip these for ideation; come back to them only to register.
Quick comparison

Frequently asked
Which generator is genuinely fastest?+
Namelix wins on raw speed because it doesn't check availability. NameBuddy and Brandsnap take 30-90s because they actually verify each name with the registries — what you trade in speed you gain in not seeing dead names.
Are AI-generated names trademark-safe?+
No tool can guarantee this. AI generators may produce names that conflict with existing marks. Run any short-listed name through USPTO TESS (US) or your jurisdiction's equivalent before committing.
Why do most AI tools default to .com only?+
Their availability backend is .com-only. Expanding to .ai/.io/.app means integrating WHOIS for each registry, which is a real engineering project.
